The Nigerian military has neutralised over 30 Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) terrorists in a series of precision air strikes under Operation HADIN KAI, conducted in the Lake Chad region of Borno State. The operation, carried out following credible intelligence, targeted terrorist logistics and movement along waterways near Kaniram Island. Counter-insurgency expert Zagazola Makama confirmed the development in a post on X, citing intelligence sources and detailed surveillance data.
The military’s air component launched the strikes after an Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) platform detected approximately 31 boats along the riverbank, accompanied by human activity consistent with ISWAP fighters. The ISR system maintained overhead surveillance, enabling real-time tracking and positive identification of the targets. Once confirmed, the air force initiated precision strikes in accordance with established Rules of Engagement and targeting protocols.
The first strike successfully disrupted the terrorist hub, damaging multiple boats used for transporting weapons and supplies across the waterways. This significantly degraded ISWAP’s logistical capabilities in the area. Subsequent ISR monitoring revealed that surviving fighters attempted to regroup within dense vegetation near the shoreline, prompting follow-up strikes.
A second precision attack targeted a cluster of about eight terrorists, resulting in their neutralisation. Additional enemy elements were spotted retreating into concealed positions, prompting further engagement. A third strike then targeted another group of approximately 15 terrorists who had taken cover under tree foliage, leading to their complete elimination. Battle Damage Assessment (BDA) confirmed significant attrition, with surviving fighters seen fleeing from nearby hideouts.
The operation underscores the Nigerian military’s increasing reliance on intelligence-driven, precision-based tactics to combat insurgency in the Lake Chad region. The use of ISR platforms and coordinated air strikes reflects advancements in operational planning and execution. Makama emphasized that the strikes were conducted with strict adherence to military protocols, minimizing collateral damage while maximizing effectiveness against terrorist infrastructure.
This latest development comes amid ongoing efforts to restore security in northeastern Nigeria, where ISWAP and other militant groups have long posed a serious threat. The successful neutralisation of over 30 terrorists demonstrates the military’s sustained commitment to dismantling ISWAP’s operational networks. As the region continues to face security challenges, such targeted operations are expected to play a crucial role in weakening the group’s capacity to carry out attacks.
