A 42-year-old man, Alfa Funmilayo Fatai, has been arrested by the Ogun State Police Command for allegedly raping an 8-year-old girl in Kara, Ibafo Local Government Area of the state. The incident occurred in an uncompleted building, where the suspect was apprehended while committing the heinous act. The minor, whose identity has been withheld for protection, was immediately taken to the Ogun State University Teaching Hospital (OOUTH) in Sagamu for medical examination and treatment. Police have confirmed that the suspect confessed to the crime during initial questioning.
DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, the police spokesperson, confirmed the arrest on Thursday, stating that investigations are ongoing to determine the full circumstances surrounding the case. He emphasized that the suspect was apprehended by police operatives who responded to an emergency report. The victim’s condition is currently stable, and she is receiving necessary medical and psychological care at the hospital. Authorities have also activated the gender unit to handle the sensitive nature of the case.
The case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Eleweran, Abeokuta, for further investigation and possible prosecution. Babaseyi assured the public that the police are committed to ensuring justice for the victim and that all legal procedures will be followed. He urged members of the public to report any suspicious activities, especially those involving children, to the nearest police station.
This incident has sparked concern among residents of Kara and surrounding communities, who are calling for stricter enforcement of child protection laws. Child rights advocates have also expressed alarm, highlighting the vulnerability of minors in underserved areas. The arrest comes amid growing calls for increased security and better monitoring of high-risk zones, particularly abandoned or uncompleted buildings where such crimes often occur.
The Ogun State Police Command has reiterated its zero-tolerance policy on sexual violence, especially against children. They have also promised to intensify patrols in vulnerable areas to prevent similar incidents. The case is expected to be presented in court once investigations are completed. Authorities are working closely with social welfare agencies to provide long-term support for the victim and her family.
As the legal process unfolds, the community remains on high alert, demanding swift justice and stronger measures to protect children from sexual predators. This case underscores the urgent need for public awareness, community vigilance, and robust legal enforcement to safeguard the rights and safety of minors across Nigeria.
