Suspected Boko Haram terrorists killed four soldiers and one civilian in a violent attack on Mussa community in Askira/Uba Local Government Area of Borno State on Wednesday afternoon. The assault, which lasted approximately 30 minutes, triggered widespread panic as heavy gunfire echoed through the area, prompting residents to flee their homes in search of safety. Chairman of Askira/Uba LGA, Mada Saidu, confirmed the incident on Thursday, revealing that the victims included four military personnel and a woman who lost her life during the assault.
The attack occurred around noon, with insurgents launching a coordinated offensive against the community. Military sources disclosed that the soldiers killed were members of the 115 Task Force Battalion, who were actively engaged in repelling the attackers and preventing them from entering the town. Despite being outnumbered, the troops put up a strong resistance, successfully halting the insurgents’ advance. “Four of our men were killed while ensuring the terrorists did not gain entrance into the town. The attackers were not many, but it was a coordinated attempt to break through,” a military source said.
Residents described the scene as chaotic, with gunshots ringing out across Mussa ward around 12 p.m. Many ran for cover, fearing a full-scale invasion. “We heard serious gunshots and people started running around 12 p.m. If not for the soldiers, the terrorists would have entered the town and caused more destruction,” one local resident recounted. The community remains on high alert, with families still hesitant to return to their homes.
This attack is part of a broader pattern of violence in Borno State, where militant groups have continued to target both military installations and civilian settlements. Despite ongoing counter-insurgency operations, the region remains vulnerable to such assaults. The military has yet to issue an official statement confirming the details of the incident, leaving residents and families of the victims in anxious anticipation.
The loss of four soldiers and one civilian underscores the ongoing security challenges in the Northeast. As the government continues to strengthen military presence and intelligence operations, communities like Mussa remain at the frontline of this protracted conflict. The incident highlights the urgent need for sustained efforts to restore peace and protect lives in the region.
