Nigerian Dancer Tobi Omoteso in Ireland Loses Vision After Brutal Road Rage Attack

A Nigerian hip-hop dancer and community advocate based in the Republic of Ireland, Tobi Omoteso, is fighting for his vision after being violently attacked during a road-rage incident on Saturday while en route to the Top 8 Street Dance & Hip-hop Fest in Limerick. The assault, which left him with severe eye injuries and multiple lacerations, has sparked widespread public concern and prompted a massive outpouring of support through a GoFundMe campaign that has raised over €62,000 as of press time.

Omoteso recounted that the incident began when a driver began tailing his car after a brief dispute over traffic blocking. Though he admitted to returning an offensive gesture with a middle finger, he emphasized that he was the only person targeted. The suspect, who had a bat in hand, swerved into his vehicle, smashed the windows, and unleashed a violent attack that sent glass shards flying across his body. “Like a couple of minutes after I left my estate, he just came in, swerved in like a swat, you know? Got out of this car. There was another guy as well with him who also wanted to attempt to get out of the car,” Omoteso told Live95 News.

The shattered glass cut his hands and face, and critically, pierced his eye, slicing one of his irises in half. He described the damage as permanent, requiring at least three surgeries to try to restore partial vision. “All the glass and everything caught my hands, caught my face, and obviously entered my eye and permanently damaged my eye,” he said. The injuries have forced him to seek medical treatment at St. John’s Hospital and University Hospital Limerick, where doctors are working to stabilize his condition.

Omoteso, who uses dance and music to advocate for youth and community empowerment, now faces long-term vision impairment that could significantly impact his career. “I’m battling about three to four operations to at least try to save the eye and get the eye some sort of working, but it is permanently damaged now,” he explained. The emotional and physical toll of the attack has been immense, but the overwhelming support from the public has provided some comfort.

The Irish national police force, Gardaí, confirmed the incident and stated that an investigation is underway. A spokesperson told the Irish Examiner that a car was damaged and a male in his 30s sustained serious injuries. Authorities have not yet released details on the suspect or the progress of the investigation.

As Omoteso continues his recovery, the incident has drawn attention to road safety and violence in Ireland, particularly against vulnerable individuals. His story serves as a stark reminder of how quickly a minor traffic dispute can escalate into life-altering trauma. The road ahead for Omoteso will be long, but with medical care and public support, he remains determined to rebuild his life and continue his work in the dance community.
