A senior member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Olugbenga Omole, has announced his plans to seek a seat in the Ondo State House of Assembly in the 2027 general election. This decision marks his return to legislation, an arena he served in previously between 2019 and 2023. Omole, formerly a Special Adviser on Transport to Ondo State Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa, intends to represent the Akoko South West Constituency I.
The declaration came during an event in Oka-Akoko on April 5, where Omole also unveiled a ₦20 million community development fund. This fund aims to support groups including youths, students, artisans, market women, farmers, and religious leaders. Omole emphasized that his decision to contest was motivated by a “social contract” with his constituents, fulfilling a commitment to represent their needs effectively.
In his address, Omole highlighted his focus on youth empowerment, infrastructure development, and inclusive governance if elected. He also expressed his intention to advocate for the creation of more Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs) in the constituency, mentioning that Oka could benefit from additional local governance units. He further committed to prioritizing infrastructure improvements and expanding opportunities for the youth, underscoring these as key challenges for the area.
Omole’s announcement was met with support from key figures. Governor Aiyedatiwa, via his representative Victor Olabimtan, praised Omole as a “tested and trusted leader,” endorsing his candidacy. The Governor noted Omole’s longstanding involvement and dedication to public service. Additionally, Kolawole Babatunde, the APC chairman in Ondo State, commended Omole’s previous contributions to Oka-Akoko and reiterated the party’s commitment to fully backing all its candidates.
Reflecting on his previous term in the Assembly, Omole highlighted several achievements, including creating employment opportunities for constituents, supporting the Amotekun Corps, and providing palliatives during the COVID-19 lockdown. Other accomplishments included resolving disputes among farmers, supporting adult literacy and vocational education, and investing in agricultural development. Omole’s efforts also extended to grassroots sports and infrastructure projects.
Before making his declaration, Omole consulted with traditional leaders, obtaining blessings from the Olubaka of Oka, Yusuf Adebori Adeleye, and the Asin of Iwaro Oka, Omoyejola Pius Akande. The monarchs encouraged him to prioritize infrastructure development across Oka communities.
As preparations ramp up for the 2027 elections, Omole’s announcement highlights the growing momentum among APC members seeking to leverage their experience and record of service to earn the trust of voters once again. His focus on infrastructure and youth empowerment underscores the pressing needs of the constituency, positioning him as a candidate committed to continued growth and development. This move sets the stage for a competitive race in Ondo State, where ensuring effective representation and addressing local challenges remains critical for aspirants.
