The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has warned President Bola Tinubu that he risks losing the 2027 general elections due to growing public discontent over economic hardship and rising insecurity across Nigeria. In a statement released on Friday by its National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, the party accused the President of ignoring the suffering of millions of Nigerians while focusing on political theatrics. The ADC’s remarks come in response to Tinubu’s recent comments, in which he reportedly mocked opposition parties during a public address, dismissing their convention as unimportant.
The ADC described Tinubu’s statements as “unpresidential,” arguing that they revealed a leader out of touch with the daily struggles of ordinary citizens. The party emphasized that Nigerians are grappling with a historic cost of living crisis, soaring food inflation, increasing debt burdens, and a sharp decline in purchasing power. According to the ADC, these challenges are compounded by widespread insecurity, including the alarming reports of children being abducted from examination centres—incidents that underscore the deepening crisis in public safety.
The opposition party pointed out that while Tinubu was making light of the opposition, real tragedies were unfolding across the country. “What Nigerians saw was not the confidence of a leader in control. It was the anxiety of a President increasingly disconnected from the reality of hardship, insecurity, and frustration facing millions of citizens,” the ADC stated. The party also challenged Tinubu’s claim that the opposition held its convention on the streets, insisting that the event was conducted in a formal and organized manner, suggesting the President may have been misinformed.
In addition, the ADC criticized Tinubu’s apparent attempt to court supporters of former President Muhammadu Buhari ahead of the next election, calling the move hypocritical. The party argued that Tinubu’s administration has failed to deliver on key promises, including economic recovery and improved security, which are critical issues for voters in 2027. The ADC maintains that the President’s focus on political rivalry rather than national development is a major concern for the electorate.
As the 2027 elections draw nearer, the ADC is positioning itself as a credible alternative, appealing to voters disillusioned with current leadership. The party’s message centers on accountability, economic reform, and security enhancement—issues it believes are central to Nigeria’s future. With public frustration mounting, the ADC’s warning to Tinubu underscores the growing political pressure facing the administration as it approaches the next electoral cycle.
