Nigeria’s leadership crisis remains a central issue ahead of the 2027 general election, according to Prof. Sodiq Gombe, National Chairman of the opposition Social Democratic Party (SDP). Speaking on Tuesday, Gombe emphasized that poor leadership is the root cause of the country’s ongoing challenges, affecting governance, security, and economic development. He argued that the majority of leaders across the National Assembly, the Executive, and the Judiciary suffer from serious character flaws, which has allowed unqualified individuals to occupy critical positions of power. This, he said, has led to a situation where illiterates are now in leadership roles, undermining national progress.
Gombe highlighted the 2027 general election as a pivotal moment for Nigeria’s youth to take charge and reshape the nation’s future. He urged young Nigerians to actively participate in the electoral process and use their votes to bring about meaningful change. “The youths can make a difference in the coming 2027 general elections,” he stated, stressing that leadership is the country’s most pressing problem. According to him, if leadership is not addressed at the top, no other sector of society will achieve lasting success. He warned that without a shift in leadership quality, Nigeria will continue to face instability, poor service delivery, and widespread insecurity.
The SDP leader pointed out that the current political class has failed to deliver on core promises, leaving the nation in a state of stagnation. He criticized the lack of integrity and competence among elected officials, saying that these shortcomings have eroded public trust in government institutions. Gombe called on the youth to rise above apathy and become agents of transformation by holding candidates accountable during the 2027 elections. He believes that a new generation of leaders, chosen by the youth, can reverse the country’s decline and build a more inclusive and prosperous Nigeria.
