Labour Party presidential candidate Chibuzo Okereke has officially announced Hajja Bintu Konto as his running mate for the 2027 general election, citing her competence and the national interest as the sole reasons for the selection. The announcement, made in Abuja on Saturday, marks a significant step in the party’s campaign to establish a “Nigerians First” government. Okereke described the nomination, which was endorsed by the party’s leadership, as a defining moment in their collective mission to build a Nigeria that truly serves its citizens.
In a statement, Okereke expressed gratitude to God and emphasized his sense of responsibility in choosing Konto as his vice presidential candidate. He said, “Today signifies another pivotal moment in our shared journey towards creating a Nigeria that serves its citizens. It is with gratitude to God and a sense of responsibility that I extend my congratulations to Hajja Bintu Konto as my Vice Presidential Candidate.” The decision, he stressed, was guided by one principle: the best interests of Nigeria and its people.
Okereke highlighted that the Labour Party remains committed to competence, integrity, inclusion, and transformational leadership. He portrayed Konto as a dedicated nurse, public health specialist, humanitarian, and development expert whose career has been focused on improving lives and strengthening communities across the country. Her professional background, he noted, makes her uniquely qualified to contribute to national development and governance.
The presidential candidate also underscored the importance of gender inclusion in leadership. He stated that excluding women from leadership roles weakens national capacity and undermines the strength of institutions. “Nations that harness the abilities of both men and women create more robust institutions and foster inclusive democracies,” he said. “Women are essential allies in constructing the Nigeria we aspire to achieve. Neglecting them is akin to trying to clap with one hand.”
Okereke praised Konto for her bravery, resilience, compassion, and professional excellence, saying she embodies the values the Labour Party seeks to uphold in government. He also thanked key party leaders, including National Chairman Dr. Alex Otti, Senator Nenadi Usman, and National Secretary Rt. Hon. Iheanacho Obioma, for their support in finalizing the ticket.
The candidate urged party members and Nigerians at large to unite behind the vision of a just, secure, and prosperous nation. He called for collective action to ensure that the 2027 election brings meaningful change and genuine transformation. As the Labour Party prepares for the upcoming electoral cycle, the selection of Hajja Bintu Konto as vice presidential candidate signals a deliberate push toward inclusive and capable leadership. This move is expected to energize the party’s base and attract broader support from Nigerians seeking change.
