2027: Gov Yusuf Calls on Lawyers to Uphold Rule of Law and Safeguard Democracy

Kano State Governor, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, has urged lawyers across Nigeria to uphold the rule of law and play a proactive role in ensuring a transparent, peaceful, and credible democratic process ahead of the 2027 general elections. The call was made during the opening of the Second Annual Summit of the Arewa Young Lawyers’ Association on Thursday, an event attended by young legal professionals from across Northern Nigeria. In his address, the governor emphasized the critical responsibility of legal practitioners in safeguarding Nigeria’s democratic institutions, particularly during election periods.

The governor’s remarks were delivered through a statement issued by his spokesperson and Director General of Media and Publicity, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa. He stressed that lawyers have a constitutional duty to protect democracy, especially when election-related disputes arise. According to Governor Yusuf, the conduct of legal professionals before, during, and after elections significantly influences public trust in the judiciary. “The legal community plays an indispensable role in safeguarding the integrity of our democracy,” he said, underscoring the need for impartiality and fairness in handling electoral cases.

He further noted that justice must prevail without compromise during political disputes to strengthen democratic institutions rather than weaken them. The governor highlighted that the way legal practitioners handle election petitions and related matters directly affects public confidence in the electoral process. He called on lawyers to act with professionalism, integrity, and a commitment to the rule of law, especially as Nigeria prepares for the next general elections.

On justice sector reforms, Governor Yusuf announced that his administration has expanded the use of Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) mechanisms to reduce delays in the court system. This initiative, he said, aims to improve access to justice and ensure faster resolution of cases, particularly in civil and minor criminal matters. He encouraged legal professionals to embrace such reforms and support efforts to make the justice system more efficient and responsive to the needs of the people.

Governor Yusuf also urged young lawyers to remain committed to fairness, justice, and ethical standards in their practice. He emphasized that their actions today will shape the future of Nigeria’s democracy. As the country moves closer to the 2027 elections, the governor’s message serves as a reminder of the vital role the legal profession must play in maintaining peace and credibility in the electoral process. The summit provided a platform for young lawyers to engage on issues affecting the justice sector and to reaffirm their dedication to democratic values.
