The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has accused the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) of undermining Nigeria’s democracy, a claim made public during a televised interview on Saturday. Osa Director, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, delivered the statement on Symfoni TV, highlighting growing concerns over democratic backsliding in the country ahead of the 2027 general elections. He emphasized that the APC’s conduct since assuming power in 2015 reflects a dangerous trend that threatens the foundation of democratic governance.
Director cited a Harvard University-published book titled Why Democracies Die, which argues that the greatest threat to democracy does not come from military coups or external forces, but from leaders who win power democratically and then exploit their position to weaken democratic institutions. According to him, this is precisely what is happening in Nigeria today. “The greatest challenge to democracy is not the armour tank or the booming guns, but is by those who find themselves in position of authority through democratic process, who will now use their position to subvert democracy and undermine democratic institutions,” he stated.
He pointed out specific areas where democratic principles are being eroded, including the lack of respect for the judiciary and the suppression of press freedom. Director criticized the government’s treatment of political opponents, describing it as an attempt to crush dissent rather than engage in healthy democratic competition. He argued that such actions create an environment of fear and intimidation, discouraging genuine participation in the political process.
The NDC official stressed that these developments are not isolated incidents but part of a broader pattern that has persisted throughout the APC’s tenure. He warned that if left unchecked, this erosion could lead to irreversible damage to Nigeria’s democratic framework. The upcoming 2027 elections, he said, will be a critical test of whether the country can reclaim its democratic integrity or continue down a path of authoritarian consolidation.
Director called on Nigerians to remain vigilant and actively defend democratic values, urging citizens to hold leaders accountable and demand transparency. He also encouraged opposition parties to unite and present a strong alternative to the current administration. As Nigeria prepares for another electoral cycle, the NDC’s allegations add to the growing discourse on governance, accountability, and the future of democracy in the nation. The coming years may well determine whether Nigeria strengthens its democratic institutions or faces further decline.
