Dr Yabani explained that holding the local government polls in June would have created logistical and operational challenges for political parties, journalists, and other stakeholders. “What it means is that we are fully within the law; we are not breaking any regulations. That is why it was seamless for us to move the date to the 26th of September,” he stated, underscoring the commission’s adherence to due process and legal frameworks.
The screening is being carried out simultaneously across the state’s three senatorial zones to ensure efficiency and uniformity. Councillorship candidates are being vetted at zonal centres located in Damaturu, Potiskum, and Nguru, while aspirants for chairmanship and vice-chairmanship positions are undergoing evaluation at the YSIEC headquarters in Damaturu. Each screening centre is staffed with dedicated teams composed of permanent members and technical experts from the commission to guarantee transparency and thoroughness.
