A local vigilante member, Hambali Sa’adu, was killed in a deadly ambush by suspected armed bandits at the Yankari Game Reserve in Bauchi State on Sunday. The attack occurred around 1:30 pm along the Bakin Layi axis of the reserve, where a joint patrol team of police officers from the Mai-Ari Outpost and community vigilantes came under heavy gunfire. The 27-year-old Sa’adu, an indigene of Mai-Ari Village in Maimadi Ward, sustained fatal gunshot wounds during the assault and was later confirmed dead by a medical doctor. His remains were buried in accordance with Islamic rites, as reported by the Police Public Relations Officer, Nafiu Abubakar.
The police stated that the security team regrouped after the initial attack and launched a counteroffensive against the fleeing bandits. In a fierce gun battle, the joint force displayed courage and tactical precision, forcing the assailants to retreat. The police confirmed that four bandits were killed during the exchange of gunfire, while four others were arrested and are currently in custody for further investigation. The operation highlighted the ongoing threat of banditry in the region and the risks faced by both security personnel and community volunteers.
Commissioner of Police, Sani-Omolori Aliyu, expressed deep condolences to the family of Hambali Sa’adu and the Mai-Ari community. He described the deceased as a brave patriot who made the ultimate sacrifice in defending his people. Aliyu reiterated the police command’s unwavering commitment to combating banditry and other violent crimes in the state. He announced intensified bush-combing operations around the Yankari Game Reserve to flush out remaining suspects and prevent future attacks.
The incident underscores the persistent insecurity in Bauchi State, particularly in areas bordering the game reserve, which has become a hotspot for criminal activities. Despite increased security measures, armed groups continue to exploit remote and forested zones to carry out ambushes and attacks. The killing of Sa’adu has sparked concern among local communities, who rely heavily on vigilante groups to complement official security efforts. The police have urged residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities.
This tragic event highlights the dangers faced by those on the frontlines of security, both in uniform and in civilian roles. As authorities step up operations, the focus remains on restoring peace and protecting lives in vulnerable areas. The death of Hambali Sa’adu serves as a reminder of the ongoing struggle against banditry and the need for sustained security interventions in northern Nigeria.
