Tinubu Urges Nigerians to Prioritize Continuity and Progress in 2027 Elections

Niger Without Borders, a prominent governance advocacy group, has called on Nigerians to prioritize continuity, stability, and progress in the 2027 general elections by re-electing President Bola Tinubu. The group formally endorsed Tinubu for a second term, along with Governor Mohammed Umar Bago of Niger State and Senator Mohammed Sani Musa, during a press conference held in Abuja on Tuesday. The announcement reflects a strategic push to sustain ongoing reforms and policy direction at both federal and state levels.

Comrade Hussaini Abubakar, speaking on behalf of the group, emphasized that the decision to back these leaders was based on measurable outcomes and consistent performance. He highlighted President Tinubu’s economic reforms, particularly the removal of fuel subsidies and the unification of the foreign exchange market, as critical steps that have begun to yield positive results. These measures, though initially challenging, have contributed to a narrowing fiscal deficit—from over 5% to around 3% of GDP—and improved economic growth projections nearing 4.5%.

Inflation, which once soared above 30%, has now eased to the mid-teens, while external reserves have strengthened and government revenue has increased. Abubakar acknowledged the sacrifices made by Nigerians during this transition but stressed that the reforms have placed the country on a sustainable development path. He warned that disrupting this trajectory would lead to regression and undermine hard-won gains.

At the state level, Niger Without Borders praised Governor Bago, known as the ‘Farmer Governor’, for transforming agriculture in Niger State. His focus on mechanized farming, irrigation projects, and rural infrastructure has positioned the state as a potential food production hub for Nigeria and West Africa. The group noted that this shift from subsistence farming to agribusiness is vital for national food security and economic resilience.

Senator Musa was commended for his legislative contributions, including bills on employment, infrastructure protection, and institutional reforms. His effective work in Senate committees was also cited as evidence of his commitment to national development. Abubakar urged Nigerians to look beyond short-term political noise and focus on long-term progress. “Nations do not progress by constantly restarting their policies,” he said. “They progress by sustaining and refining them.”

The group’s endorsement underscores a growing belief among some civic actors that continuity in leadership is essential for Nigeria’s economic and social transformation. As the 2027 elections approach, Niger Without Borders’ call may influence voter decisions, especially among those prioritizing stability and policy consistency over political change.
