The Birnin Gwari Emirate Progressives Union (BEPU) has condemned the brutal killing of six innocent farmers by armed bandits on Monday, 22 June 2026, at Kujijiro farmlands in Kuyello District of Birnin Gwari Local Government Area, Kaduna State. The victims were attacked while engaged in lawful farming activities, leaving the entire community in mourning and deep fear. BEPU described the incident as a grave violation of peace and a direct threat to the stability of the region, calling for urgent government intervention to stop the wave of violence.
Dr. Isah Muhammad, Chairman of BEPU, issued a statement on Tuesday expressing profound sorrow over the loss of lives and highlighting the recurring nature of attacks in Eastern Birnin Gwari. He noted that despite ongoing efforts to restore peace, communities like Kuyello continue to face relentless killings and criminal activities. The attack, he said, has once again plunged the area into grief and uncertainty, undermining the progress made in recent months.
BEPU emphasized that the continued targeting of farmers and rural dwellers poses a serious threat to the peace and development of Birnin Gwari. The Union stressed that no part of the Emirate should be left behind in the pursuit of lasting peace, as the safety of one community is directly linked to the safety of all. Dr. Muhammad reminded stakeholders that Birnin Gwari is a single community with shared history and destiny, and the pain of one section must be felt by all.
The Union warned that if immediate and decisive action is not taken, many farmers may abandon their farms, leading to reduced food production and rising food prices across Kaduna State and Northern Nigeria. This, they cautioned, could trigger broader economic hardship and food insecurity. BEPU called on the Federal and Kaduna State Governments to take practical steps to dismantle criminal networks that have defied peace and continue to terrorize innocent citizens.
They urged the Minister of Defence, the National Security Adviser, the Nigerian Armed Forces, the Nigeria Police Force, and all security agencies to intensify operations in Kuyello and the wider Eastern Birnin Gwari region. The people, they insisted, deserve to live without fear, to farm their lands, and to carry out daily activities in safety. BEPU also appealed to the Kaduna State Government to strengthen security presence and provide necessary support to protect lives and property in vulnerable areas.
The Union extended its condolences to the families of the deceased, praying for divine comfort and strength during this difficult time. They encouraged the people of Birnin Gwari to remain calm, united, and law-abiding, while cooperating fully with security agencies to combat insecurity. BEPU reaffirmed its commitment to working with government and stakeholders to prevent a return to the era of widespread killings, kidnappings, and fear. The incident underscores the urgent need for sustained security and development efforts to ensure lasting peace in the region.
