The Oyo State Police Command has successfully recovered a hijacked DAF tanker truck abandoned by suspected criminals in the Ile-Igbon area of the state, following a series of intelligence-led operations aimed at curbing violent crime and vehicle theft. The recovery, carried out after sustained surveillance and credible intelligence, marks a significant step in the ongoing efforts to restore security and protect property across Oyo State. The tanker, which had been left unattended for several days, was found in a deserted location after the suspects fled upon realizing they were being tracked by security operatives.
According to the Police Public Relations Officer, Ayanlade Olayinka, the vehicle was originally hijacked along the Ijebu-Ode axis in neighbouring Ogun State before being moved into Oyo State. Preliminary investigations confirmed that the criminals had unlawfully taken control of the truck and attempted to flee with it, but were forced to abandon it due to intensified police surveillance. The driver of the tanker later identified the recovered vehicle and confirmed that he had been forcefully taken off the road during the incident, with the suspects taking full control of the truck.
The owner of the tanker also verified the details, stating that the incident had been reported to police authorities in Ogun State prior to the recovery. The vehicle has now been secured and taken into custody by Oyo State police, pending the completion of investigations and necessary inter-state administrative procedures. The command emphasized its collaboration with the Ogun State Police Command to ensure the tanker is returned to its rightful owner as swiftly as possible.
Commissioner of Police, Abimbola Ayodeji Olugbemiga, reaffirmed the command’s commitment to intelligence-driven policing and continued operations against criminal networks operating within the state. He stressed that proactive surveillance and community cooperation are vital in disrupting criminal activities and enhancing public safety. Olugbemiga urged residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to security agencies, emphasizing that timely and credible information can make a critical difference in preventing crime.
The recovery of the hijacked tanker underscores the effectiveness of coordinated efforts between state police commands and highlights the importance of intelligence in combating vehicle theft and related crimes. As investigations continue, authorities remain focused on apprehending the suspects and ensuring justice for the victim. This development sends a strong message to criminal elements that security agencies are actively working to restore order and protect citizens’ property across the region.
