Three kidnappers were killed in a police operation in Abia State, as security forces dismantled a criminal hideout and destroyed a shrine used by the suspects for protection. The incident occurred during an intense exchange of fire between operatives of the Abia State Police Command and the armed kidnappers in Mbutu Amankwo village, Isiala Ngwa Local Government Area. Commissioner of Police Danladi Isa confirmed the development during a press briefing on Tuesday, April 14, 2026, highlighting the command’s achievements from April 1 to April 14, 2026.
The operation was launched following actionable intelligence linked to a kidnapping case reported on March 29, 2026, at Opobo Road, Ogbor Hill, Aba. Police operatives tracked the suspects to their hideout in Mbutu Amankwo, where a fierce gunfight erupted upon arrival. The kidnappers fled into the bush while firing at the officers, but were overwhelmed by the superior firepower of the police command. Three of the suspects were neutralized during the encounter, while the rest escaped into the forest.
In addition to eliminating the kidnappers, police operatives set fire to a shrine the criminals had used to seek spiritual protection. This act symbolized the dismantling of both physical and spiritual elements supporting criminal activities in the region. The Commissioner emphasized that the operation reflects the command’s commitment to eradicating kidnapping and other forms of violent crime in Abia State.
At the Police Headquarters in Umuahia, CP Isa displayed recovered exhibits from the operation. Among the items seized were eight AK-47 rifles, three single-barrel guns, one pump-action gun, a Lexus RX 300 Jeep with registration number NGK 877 SU, SIM cards, a collection of vehicle keys, various charms, and other incriminating evidence. These items underscore the level of sophistication and organization within the criminal network.
The Commissioner reiterated that the Abia State Police Command remains resolute in its mission to ensure peace and security across the state. He urged residents to cooperate with security agencies by reporting any suspicious movements or activities in their communities. CP Isa stressed that public participation is crucial in identifying and dismantling criminal hideouts before they can cause harm.
The successful operation marks a significant blow to kidnapping syndicates operating in the region. As investigations continue, authorities are working to identify any remaining suspects and recover any abducted victims. The police’s sustained efforts are expected to deter criminal elements and restore confidence in the security situation across Abia State.
