Police Arraign 12 Suspects Over Alleged Rape, Defilement, and Child Abuse in Anambra State

The Anambra State Police Command has arraigned 12 suspects for serious offences including rape, defilement, child abuse, and assault, marking a strong stance against gender-based violence and child exploitation in the state. The arraignment took place on Wednesday, 8th July 2026, before the Gender Magistrate Court in Awka, as part of the command’s ongoing efforts to protect women and children. All suspects were remanded at the Awka Correctional Centre pending further hearings in their respective cases.

Among those arraigned are Chima Onyeanuna, Emeka Muo, and Okafor Chibundu, who are accused of abducting and defiling a 14-year-old girl in Nanka. The court also heard cases against Ndubuisi Ikechebelu, Udogu Kennedy, Nnamah Christopher, and Chinecherem Emmanuel, who are facing charges of repeatedly raping a 19-year-old girl, resulting in her pregnancy. These allegations have drawn widespread attention due to the severity and repeated nature of the offences.

In another case, Chukwudi Ugwu Jeremiah was arraigned for allegedly defiling an 11-year-old girl along Slaughter Lane in Awka. Charity Anakwe and Chidiere Anakwe were also brought before the court over the alleged assault of their 12-year-old house help. Additionally, Chukwudi Joseph was charged with assaulting a 12-year-old girl in Ozubulu, while Chibuike Agu faces charges of defiling a 13-year-old girl in Fegge.

The police command, through its spokesperson SP Tochukwu Ikenga, emphasized its zero-tolerance policy towards sexual and gender-based violence, child abuse, and any form of harm inflicted on vulnerable individuals. The statement reaffirmed the command’s commitment to ensuring justice for victims and maintaining public safety. The police assured the public that investigations into such cases would continue with diligence and that offenders would be prosecuted in accordance with the law.

The arraignment reflects a broader effort by law enforcement in Anambra State to address rising concerns about violence against children and women. With these actions, the police aim to send a clear message that perpetrators of such crimes will not escape accountability. As more cases come to light, the command remains vigilant in its mission to uphold justice and protect the rights of victims across the state.
