The Oyo State Police Command has arrested a suspected armed robber and recovered a stolen motorcycle following a violent attack on a commercial motorcyclist in the Apata area of Ibadan. The incident occurred when the victim, Muhammadu Kamilu, was allegedly assaulted by a passenger who struck him with an iron hammer before fleeing with his Bajaj Boxer motorcycle. Police acted swiftly after receiving credible information from a concerned citizen, leading to the arrest of the suspect, Shafiu Nuhu, and the recovery of the stolen vehicle with registration number AJW 842 QU.
Operatives from the command’s Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU) were deployed to the scene immediately upon receiving the tip. They apprehended the suspect and also recovered the iron hammer used in the attack. The commercial motorcyclist sustained injuries during the assault, and Nathaniel Ibrahim, a passerby who tried to intervene, was also injured. Both men were rushed to a nearby hospital for medical treatment and are currently receiving care.
During interrogation, the suspect confessed to being a lone armed robber who specifically targeted commercial motorcyclists in Ibadan and surrounding areas. He admitted to carrying out similar attacks in the past, which prompted police to launch a broader investigation into his possible involvement in other criminal activities. Authorities are also working to recover any additional tools or evidence linked to his operations.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Abimbola Ayodeji Olugbenga, commended the bravery of Nathaniel Ibrahim and praised the public for their vigilance and cooperation. He emphasized the importance of community involvement in maintaining security and urged residents to remain alert and report suspicious activities through official channels. The police command reiterated its commitment to protecting lives and property through intelligence-led and proactive policing strategies.
This arrest highlights the ongoing efforts by law enforcement to combat armed robbery and other violent crimes in Oyo State. With increasing reports of attacks on commercial motorcyclists, the police are intensifying patrols and surveillance in high-risk areas. The successful recovery of the motorcycle and the arrest of the suspect send a strong message to criminal elements that justice will be served. The police remain focused on ensuring public safety and restoring confidence in the security system across the state.
