Osayi Samuel’s Dad Confirms Star Super Eagles Defender Not Born in Nigeria: “I Knew They Would Call Him Up”

Osayi Samuels Dad Confirms Star Super Eagles Defender Not Born in Nigeria: I Knew They Would Call Him Up

Bright Osayi-Samuel, the Super Eagles defender, was born in Europe, not in Okija, Anambra State, as previously believed, according to his father, Nelson Osayi. The revelation comes from an interview conducted in 2023 and released by Elegebte TV Sports, where Nelson clarified his son’s birthplace, though he did not name the specific European country. The disclosure challenges long-held assumptions about the player’s origins and adds new context to his journey into Nigerian football.

Nelson Osayi, a Lagos-born former footballer, moved to Germany before relocating to Spain in search of better opportunities. He made the decision to live abroad partly to ensure his children would not be born in Nigeria, a choice driven by his desire for improved prospects for his family. Despite being born in Europe, Bright Osayi-Samuel has embraced his Nigerian identity, a process his father actively nurtured from an early age.

“I am a Nigerian. He was born here in Europe. I have told him everything about my country right from when he was even a year old,” Nelson said in the interview. He emphasized that he had always prepared his son for life in Nigeria, explaining cultural differences and societal norms. “They came and interviewed us, and I have been telling him Nigeria is not Europe, where you dress up and go out at midnight and come back around 6,” he added, highlighting the cultural education he provided.

Bright’s international career faced an early hurdle when he did not possess a Nigerian passport ahead of his debut against Portugal. However, the Nigeria Football Federation acted swiftly, arranging for the Nigerian embassy in Ankara to travel to Istanbul to deliver the document to the then-Fenerbahçe star. This effort ensured he could represent the national team without delay.

Since making his debut, Bright Osayi-Samuel has earned 34 caps for the Super Eagles and played a pivotal role in their bronze-medal finish at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations. His performances on the international stage have solidified his status as a key defender for Nigeria, despite his foreign birth.

The story of Bright Osayi-Samuel underscores the growing trend of Nigerian players born abroad who still choose to represent their heritage nation. As football continues to evolve in Nigeria, such narratives highlight the importance of identity, heritage, and national pride in shaping athletes’ careers. His journey is likely to inspire other young players of Nigerian descent abroad to embrace their roots and contribute to the country’s football legacy.
