Armed robbery attacks along the Nawfia axis of the Onitsha–Enugu Expressway have reignited fear among motorists and residents, with one person reportedly killed in the latest incident. The surge in criminal activities has drawn widespread concern, especially after a video of the attack began circulating on social media. Residents and commuters are demanding immediate intervention from security agencies and the Anambra State Government to restore safety on one of the South-East’s busiest highways.
A social media user raised the alarm, describing the situation as increasingly dangerous and urging authorities to act before more lives are lost. The post highlighted how armed robbers have been ambushing vehicles along the stretch, exploiting poor visibility and remote sections of the road. Despite efforts by local residents to improve security, the criminals continue to operate with growing boldness.
Residents of Nawfia community have repeatedly complained about the persistent attacks, which they say have disrupted daily life and travel. In a recent attempt to combat the menace, community members launched a massive clean-up exercise, clearing thick vegetation and removing logs that were allegedly used by robbers to barricade the road and trap unsuspecting travellers. The initiative was meant to improve visibility and make it harder for criminals to hide.
However, the community’s efforts have not deterred the attackers. The latest incident, which resulted in a fatality, has further heightened anxiety among road users. The video circulating online shows the aftermath of the attack, underscoring the severity of the situation. Many believe that without decisive action, the highway could become a dangerous no-man’s-land.
The source called on security agencies to intensify surveillance, deploy regular patrol teams, and dismantle criminal hideouts in the area. He emphasized that the Onitsha–Enugu Expressway is a critical transportation corridor, connecting major cities in the South-East and facilitating commerce and movement. Leaving it vulnerable to criminal elements is unacceptable, he stressed.
Commuters and residents have also appealed to the Anambra State Government, the police, the military, and other security bodies to act urgently and in coordination. They are demanding a swift response to restore confidence and ensure the safety of everyone using the route. The lack of an official statement from the Anambra State Police Command as of the time of filing has added to public frustration.
The situation underscores the need for sustained security operations and community-police collaboration. As travel and economic activities continue along the expressway, the safety of lives and property must be prioritized. Authorities must act decisively to prevent the Nawfia axis from becoming a symbol of insecurity in the region.
