The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate in Ogun State for the 2027 election, Oladipupo Adebutu, has accused the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) of growing panic over the rising momentum of the opposition party ahead of the polls. Speaking at a campaign rally in Odogbolu Local Government Area on Wednesday, Adebutu claimed that the APC is resorting to intimidation and sabotage, including tearing down and defacing PDP campaign materials across the state. He also directly challenged APC’s governorship aspirant and Senator representing Ogun West, Olamilekan Adeola—popularly known as Yayi—to file a lawsuit against him over allegations that Adeola is not an indigene of Ogun State.
Adebutu insisted he possesses sufficient documentation to back his claim, urging the senator’s legal team to take the matter to court. “I am daring their lawyers to sue me so that we can go and present all our documents in the court of law,” he said. He criticized Adeola’s shifting claims about his place of origin, referencing previous assertions that he was from Joga, Ishaga, and Ilaro, before being linked to Ekiti State. The PDP candidate argued that these inconsistencies prove Adeola’s status as a “fake indigene” of Ogun State.
The controversy follows a statement issued by Adeola’s media aide, Kayode Odunaro, on Tuesday, threatening legal action against APC aspirant Abayomi Hunye and PDP chieftain Folake Marcus-Bello for allegedly calling Adeola a non-indigene on national television. The senator gave them 24 hours to provide evidence or face defamation charges. In response, Adebutu dismissed the threat as weak and politically motivated, saying the APC is afraid because they know the PDP will win in 2027.
He further accused Adeola of misappropriating federal projects meant for other states like Enugu and Katsina, labeling it “maladministration.” Adebutu called out a mysterious figure named Mr Augustine, demanding transparency over project allocations. “This is not personal,” he emphasized. “It is about protecting the future of our dear state. The hardship and bad governance must not be tolerated beyond 2027.”
Deputy governorship candidate Lateefah Sowunmi-Kolapo urged voters to turn out en masse with their voter cards on February 16, 2027, to end what she described as the insensitive rule of the APC. Former Remo North LGA chairman John Obafemi echoed this call, urging citizens to reject bad governance through their votes. Folake Marcus-Bello, who stood by her claim that Adeola is not an indigene of Ogun State, promised more revelations in the coming weeks and assured the public that a PDP government would bring accountability, development, and a new dawn for the state.
Efforts to reach Adeola for comment were unsuccessful, as calls to his media aide’s line went unanswered and WhatsApp messages remained unresponsive at the time of filing this report. As the 2027 election draws closer, the political tension in Ogun State continues to escalate, with both parties intensifying their campaigns and accusations.
