The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Kano Strategic Command, has arrested 73 suspects and seized large quantities of illicit drugs during a series of coordinated raids on known drug dens in Kano State. The operation, conducted on June 10 as part of the ongoing “Operation Sharar Mafaka,” targeted key locations including the Filin Mahaha drug den, the Sani Abacha Youth Centre, and several sites in the Sheka area. The raids were carried out based on intelligence gathered by NDLEA operatives, who employed a “dislodge and occupy” strategy to dismantle drug networks and prevent their re-establishment.
Under this strategy, NDLEA officers moved swiftly into identified drug hotspots, arrested suspects on the spot, recovered contraband, and remained stationed at the sites to deter criminals from returning. The operation was led by the NDLEA Kano Strategic Command, with Assistant Superintendent of Narcotics Sadiq Muhammad Maigatari confirming the details in a statement released on Thursday. The agency emphasized that the raids were part of a broader effort to permanently disrupt and dismantle drug dens across the state.
Among the substances recovered were cannabis sativa, diazepam, pregabalin, and Exol-5, a substance locally referred to as “suck and die.” These drugs are often linked to addiction, health complications, and criminal activities. The seizure also included materials used in the distribution and consumption of narcotics, such as packaging, scales, and paraphernalia. The scale of the recovery underscores the entrenched nature of drug trafficking in some parts of Kano.
Commander CN D.Y. Lawal of the NDLEA Kano Strategic Command stated that the agency remains committed to intensifying its operations until drug traffickers and users no longer have safe havens in the state. He warned that the NDLEA will continue to target drug dens with precision and determination, using intelligence to guide its actions. Lawal also urged the public to actively support the campaign by reporting suspicious activities and providing credible intelligence that could lead to successful operations.
The NDLEA’s appeal to residents highlights the importance of community involvement in combating drug abuse and trafficking. By working together with law enforcement, citizens can help create a safer and healthier environment for all. The agency’s sustained efforts in Kano reflect a national push to curb the rising tide of drug-related crimes across Nigeria. As operations like “Operation Sharar Mafaka” continue, the hope is that drug networks will be dismantled, and communities will be liberated from the grip of substance abuse.
