NDC Urges Immediate Action Against IED Threat in Zamfara Amid Rising Insecurity

The Zamfara State chapter of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has strongly condemned the reported planting of an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) by suspected bandits along the Gurusu-Gwashi Road in Bukkuyum Local Government Area, warning that such acts represent a dangerous escalation in the state’s ongoing security crisis. The incident, which occurred recently, has raised alarm among residents and political stakeholders, prompting urgent calls for enhanced security measures. The NDC described the act as a direct threat to civilian lives and a deliberate attempt to destabilize peace in the region.

In a statement released by the party’s Publicity Secretary, Alkasimu Mustapha Kayatawa, the NDC expressed deep concern over the growing audacity of armed criminals operating in the area. Kayatawa emphasized that the placement of IEDs on major roads is not only a criminal act but also a calculated effort to instill fear and disrupt economic activities. He noted that the Gurusu-Gwashi Road is a critical route connecting several communities, making it vital for trade and daily movement.

The party urged the Federal and State Governments to intensify efforts to combat insecurity in Zamfara, particularly in remote and rural areas where banditry remains rampant. Kayatawa called for the deployment of more security personnel, improved intelligence gathering, and community-based surveillance systems to prevent future attacks. He also stressed the need for swift justice for perpetrators and better coordination between military and police units.

The NDC further appealed to local leaders and community elders to remain vigilant and work closely with security agencies to ensure early detection of suspicious activities. “This is no longer just a security issue; it is a survival issue for our people,” Kayatawa stated. He added that continued inaction could lead to greater loss of life and displacement of innocent civilians.

Residents of Bukkuyum and surrounding areas have since reported heightened anxiety, with many avoiding travel along the affected road. Some traders have suspended operations, citing safety concerns. The incident underscores the fragile security situation in northern Nigeria, where bandit groups continue to exploit weak governance and under-resourced security forces.

As authorities investigate the incident, the NDC has pledged to remain actively engaged in advocating for safer communities. The party reiterated its commitment to supporting all initiatives aimed at restoring peace and normalcy in Zamfara. This latest development serves as a stark reminder of the urgent need for comprehensive and sustained security reforms across the region.
