The reconciliation process ahead of the 2027 general elections in Kano State has sparked mixed reactions as the committee established by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf began consultations with aspirants and stakeholders across federal and state assembly constituencies. The committee, chaired by Hon. Bala Muhammad Gwagwarwa, former National Treasurer of the All Progressives Congress (APC), and with Professor Nura Yaro as secretary, is tasked with resolving internal party disputes and fostering unity. Despite widespread participation, notable figures including Hajiya Sa’adatu Salisu Yusha’u, Chairperson of Tudun-Wada Local Government and Kano State ALGON Chairperson, and her husband, Salisu Yusha’u, a House of Representatives aspirant, ignored the governor’s directive and did not attend the reconciliation meeting.
The committee’s engagement in the Doguwa/Tudun-Wada Federal Constituency has drawn particular attention due to the ongoing political rivalry between incumbent lawmaker Alhassan Ado Doguwa and Salisu Yusha’u. Stakeholders from the constituency had previously endorsed Doguwa to contest the 2027 election under the APC banner, a position reportedly supported by Governor Yusuf. Doguwa himself attended the meeting at the Kano State Government House, demonstrating his commitment to the reconciliation process. In contrast, the absence of Yusha’u and his wife was confirmed by Professor Nura Yaro D-Tofa and Hon. Mutari Ishaq Yakasai, who noted that the reconciliation exercise has already covered more than seven federal constituencies and 13 state assembly constituencies.
Other members of the committee include Hon. Mutari Ishaq Yakasai and former Commissioner for Women Affairs, Hajiya Zahara’u. Governor Yusuf had earlier instructed all APC aspirants to return to their constituencies, consult widely with stakeholders, and work toward consensus candidates as part of the first phase of the reconciliation exercise. The committee remains optimistic about completing its assignment successfully within a short timeframe, emphasizing its focus on unity, cooperation, and collective success for the party.
Political observers have expressed concern over the non-attendance of Hajiya Sa’adatu and Salisu Yusha’u, viewing it as a potential sign of resistance to the peace-building efforts within the APC. Their absence may undermine the credibility of the reconciliation process and send negative signals ahead of the 2027 elections. Despite these challenges, the committee continues to press forward, engaging stakeholders across Kano State to ensure a united and cohesive APC platform. The outcome of these reconciliation efforts will play a crucial role in shaping the party’s electoral prospects in the coming years.
