A deadly farm dispute in Kumba Village, Sama District of Burra Emirate, Ningi Local Government Area, has led to the arrest of four suspects by the Bauchi State Police Command. The incident, which occurred on Saturday, July 26, 2026, at about 2:40 pm, began over a minor disagreement between two farmers regarding the dumping of weeds on farmland. The dispute escalated into a violent altercation, resulting in the death of one man and injuries to another, prompting swift police action.
The conflict reportedly started when Yakubu Mai-Duna, 47, dumped weeds from his farm onto the land of Kabiru Yusuf, 40, both residents of Kumba Village. What began as a minor dispute quickly turned physical, involving not only the two men but also their children. According to police, Kabiru Yusuf and his three sons—Abdulrazak Yusuf, 25, Safiyanu Kabiru, 20, and Salisu Kabiru, 15—allegedly assaulted Mai-Duna and Usman Gagare, 48, who intervened to stop the fight.
Police officers from the Burra Divisional Police Headquarters responded immediately after receiving a distress call. They arrested the four suspects and rushed the injured victims to the Primary Health Care Centre in Yada-Gungume for medical treatment. Tragically, Yakubu Mai-Duna succumbed to his injuries while receiving treatment, while Usman Gagare was treated and later discharged.
The suspects are currently being investigated for alleged criminal conspiracy, causing grievous hurt, and culpable homicide. The case has been handed over to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCIID) in Bauchi for further investigation and prosecution. Authorities are working to gather more evidence and ensure justice is served in accordance with the law.
Commissioner of Police, CP Sani-Omolori Aliyu, addressed the incident and urged residents to resolve conflicts peacefully. “We urge members of the public to embrace dialogue and lawful channels in resolving disputes and to desist from taking the law into their own hands,” he said. He emphasized the police’s commitment to protecting lives and property across Bauchi State and assured the public that all those found guilty would face prosecution.
The Bauchi State Police Command also called on citizens to remain law-abiding and to report any criminal activities to security agencies promptly. This incident serves as a stark reminder of how quickly minor disagreements can spiral into deadly violence, especially in rural farming communities. As investigations continue, authorities hope the case will reinforce the importance of peaceful conflict resolution in Nigeria’s agrarian regions.
