Former Nigeria Goalkeeper Explains How Germanys Big Win Benefits Bafana Bafana

Former Super Eagles goalkeeper Daniel Akpeyi believes Germany’s emphatic 7-1 victory over Curaçao in their World Cup Group E opener on Sunday could work in Bafana Bafana’s favour in their bid to qualify for the round of 32.

For the first time since 1994, teams finishing third in their World Cup groups will have the opportunity to advance to the knockout stage.

The expansion of the tournament to 48 teams for the 2026 edition in the United States, Canada and Mexico means only 16 teams will be eliminated after the group phase, giving more nations a chance to continue their campaign beyond the opening three games.

South Africa, who finished top of a World Cup qualifying group that included the Super Eagles, could climb into at least third place in the Group A standings if they defeat the Czech Republic on June 18.

Such a result would leave Bafana Bafana in a strong position to secure a place in the round of 32.

Curacao’s poor goal difference of minus six could also work in South Africa’s favour, as they are unlikely to overtake the African side for one of the best third-place spots even if they beat Ecuador and Bafana Bafana claim victory against the Czech Republic.

Akpeyi highlighted how Germany’s emphatic win could prove beneficial for South Africa’s hopes of advancing as one of the best third-placed teams.

“Looking at the number of attempts Germany had before scoring those goals, you can see how effective they were. Fortunately for them, they were able to get seven from those chances, which is a huge win for them,” Akpeyi said on SuperSport, as monitored by allnigeriasoccer.com.

“Someone was telling me earlier that this result is good for Bafana Bafana because they can qualify as the best third-placed team.”

Bafana Bafana are yet to reach the knockout stages of the World Cup, having exited at the group stage in all three of their previous appearances in 1998, 2002 and 2010.
