Fatal Road Crash Claims Drivers Life in Lagos

A tragic lone car accident on the Oshodi-Apapa Expressway in Lagos has resulted in the death of a driver, prompting immediate response from traffic and law enforcement authorities. The incident occurred in the early hours of Saturday at Charity Bus Stop, inward Iyana Isolo, along the busy expressway corridor. The driver, operating a Honda Pilot SUV, lost control of the vehicle, which then somersaulted multiple times before coming to a stop. The severe impact left the driver dead at the scene, with his body trapped inside the mangled wreckage.

LASTMA officials, who were conducting routine traffic management duties in the Iyana Isolo area, quickly arrived at the scene. They coordinated with officers from the Mosafejo Police Division to carry out a rescue and recovery operation. The team worked efficiently to extract the victim’s body while ensuring traffic continued to flow smoothly and preventing secondary accidents. The operation was conducted with care to maintain safety and order on the road.

After the recovery, the State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit, SEHMU, took charge of the deceased’s body and evacuated it to a public mortuary in accordance with public health protocols. The damaged Honda Pilot SUV was handed over to the Mosafejo Police Division for further investigation. Authorities have launched a full inquiry to determine the immediate and underlying causes of the crash, including possible factors such as speed, road conditions, or mechanical failure.

The General Manager of LASTMA, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, expressed deep sorrow over the loss of life and extended heartfelt condolences to the family of the deceased. He emphasized the importance of road safety and urged all motorists to adhere strictly to traffic regulations. “Motorists are strongly urged to eschew reckless driving, dangerous overtaking, excessive speeding and every form of traffic infraction capable of precipitating avoidable tragedies on our roads,” Bakare-Oki stated. He stressed that human life must always come first, and no journey is urgent enough to justify compromising safety.

Bakare-Oki also called on road users to remain vigilant and cautious, especially during late-night and early-morning hours when visibility and alertness may be reduced. He highlighted the need for constant awareness and responsible driving to prevent such accidents in the future. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of high-speed driving and the importance of traffic compliance on Nigeria’s roads.

As investigations continue, authorities are urging the public to report any information that may assist in determining the cause of the crash. This incident underscores the need for sustained efforts in road safety education and enforcement across Lagos State and beyond.
