Five members of a family were found dead in their home in Umuimo, Osisioma Ngwa Local Government Area of Abia State, prompting a full-scale investigation by the Abia State Police Command. The tragic incident occurred on Wednesday, July 22, 2026, when neighbors and relatives discovered the decomposing bodies of the father, mother, and their three children after they failed to respond to repeated knocks on their locked house. The family, identified as Mr. Kachi Nnabugwu, his wife Mrs. Chinaza Nnabugwu, and their three young children, had not been seen since Sunday, raising alarm among community members.
The discovery was made after concerned relatives and neighbors, unable to contact the family, decided to break into the house. Inside, they found the bodies in an advanced state of decomposition. Containers of leftover food and a generator set were also found in the house, raising questions about the circumstances leading to the deaths. The exact cause of death remains unknown, and authorities have not ruled out any possibilities, including possible poisoning, gas leakage, or other foul play.
The bodies were evacuated from the compound on the same day and taken to the mortuary for preservation and autopsy. Residents of Umuimo have since called on the government to conduct a thorough and transparent investigation to uncover the truth behind the deaths. There is growing anxiety in the community as people demand answers and justice for the family.
DSP Maureen Chinaka, the Police Public Relations Officer for Abia State, confirmed the incident during a statement on Wednesday. She noted that the brother of the deceased reported the matter to the Osisioma Divisional Police Headquarters after failing to reach his sibling. Upon arrival, officers conducted a preliminary inspection of the crime scene, took photographs, and secured the area. The bodies have since been handed over to medical authorities for further examination.
The investigation is ongoing, with police gathering evidence and interviewing neighbors and relatives. Authorities are also reviewing possible links to the generator and food containers found inside the house. The community remains on edge as they await official findings. The incident has sparked widespread concern across Abia State, highlighting the need for improved safety and emergency response systems in rural areas. As the autopsy results are expected to provide crucial insights, the public is urged to remain patient and await official updates from law enforcement.
