Coroner Suspends Hearing in Inquest into Chimamandas Sons Death

Magistrate Adetunji raised concerns about the lack of prior notice from the AG’s office, asking why the letter had not been shared with the court earlier. Araba responded that he was not aware of the contents of the letter and had only been instructed to inform the court about the rescheduled meeting. Counsel for Atlantis Paediatric Hospital, Abiodun Layanu (SAN), and counsel for Euracare Multi-Specialist Hospital, Taiwo Osiptan (SAN), confirmed they had received the updated correspondence from the AG’s office and agreed to abide by the court’s decision.

Aderemi reiterated the family’s desire for transparency and justice, stating that the parents’ interest was not being adequately considered. “If there is restorative justice, the AG should have taken action sooner,” he said. The inquest, which began on February 25, 2026, is investigating the circumstances surrounding Nkanu’s death. The child was initially admitted to Atlantis Paediatric Hospital for a worsening illness and later transferred to Euracare Multi-Specialist Hospital for procedures including an MRI, lumbar puncture, and central line insertion. He passed away on January 7, 2026, just hours after being admitted to Euracare.

The suspension marks a pause in what has been a highly sensitive and closely watched case, with public attention focused on accountability and medical transparency in Nigeria’s healthcare system. The outcome of the May 12 meeting could determine the next steps in the inquest and the broader pursuit of justice for the Esege family.
