Suspected Boko Haram insurgents have destroyed four vehicles, including trucks and official transport, during a coordinated early morning attack on Geidam town in Geidam Local Government Area of Yobe State. The assault, which occurred around 4:30 am on Friday, left several vehicles ablaze and caused significant economic loss, particularly to traders who had loaded goods for transport after attending the weekly market. Residents reported that the attackers targeted the Geidam Local Government Secretariat first, burning a Toyota Hilux and a Sharon bus belonging to the local government.
The insurgents then moved to the market area, where they set fire to two trucks. One of the trucks was loaded with goods valued in the millions of naira, belonging to traders who had been preparing to return home after the market. According to eyewitnesses, the traders had parked their vehicles overnight and were waiting for daylight to begin their journey. The attackers torched the truck and its cargo without stealing anything, leaving the traders with nothing but charred remains. A fourth vehicle, an articulated truck, was also destroyed within the market premises, bringing the total number of vehicles burned to four.
Residents noted a shift in the insurgents’ tactics, observing that they no longer rode motorcycles into the town. Instead, they parked their bikes outside and entered on foot, likely to avoid detection by security forces. “They knew exactly where they were going,” said one resident. “They headed straight to the secretariat, burnt two official vehicles, and then moved to the market to set the trucks ablaze.” This change in strategy suggests increased planning and local knowledge, raising concerns about the insurgents’ ability to infiltrate towns with greater ease.
The incident has sparked renewed calls for enhanced security measures. Residents are urging the Federal Government, the Yobe State Government, and security agencies to deploy more personnel and provide them with adequate equipment to combat the insurgency effectively. The spokesperson for the Yobe State Police Command, SP Dungus Abdulkarim, confirmed the attack, though no further details on casualties or arrests were immediately available.
This attack highlights the ongoing security challenges in northeastern Nigeria, where Boko Haram and its affiliates continue to carry out violent operations. The destruction of vehicles and goods not only impacts local traders but also disrupts economic activity in the region. As security forces respond, communities remain on edge, hoping for stronger protection and a return to normalcy. The incident underscores the urgent need for sustained counter-insurgency efforts to safeguard lives and livelihoods in the area.
