A former governorship aspirant in Bauchi State, Farouk Mustapha, has dismissed claims that he is being considered as the running mate of Seyi Makinde, the presidential candidate of the Allied Peoples Movement (APM), calling the reports “false” and “without foundation.” Mustapha issued a statement on Friday to clarify his position amid growing speculation on social media about a potential vice-presidential nomination. He emphasized that no formal discussions have taken place between him and Makinde or any member of the APM leadership regarding the role. The politician stressed that he has not given his consent to any such proposal and urged the public to disregard the rumours.
In his statement, Mustapha said, “My attention has been drawn to speculations making the rounds on social media alleging that the presidential candidate of the Allied Peoples Movement is considering me as his running mate in the forthcoming election.” He added, “For the avoidance of doubt, I wish to state categorically that no such arrangement has been discussed with me, nor have I given my consent to any such proposition.” The clarification came after numerous journalists, supporters, and associates reached out to him seeking confirmation of the claims. Mustapha described the need for the statement as necessary to prevent misinformation from spreading and affecting public perception.
He further explained that he has not engaged in any conversations with APM officials or its presidential candidate about the vice-presidential slot. “At no point have I had any discussion with anyone, whether within the APM or with its presidential candidate, regarding the position of running mate,” he said. Mustapha emphasized that any suggestion he has agreed to such an arrangement is entirely baseless. He used a Hausa proverb, “Kowa ya san matar auren sa,” meaning “everyone knows his own bride,” to underscore the importance of clarity and personal accountability in political matters.
The politician is currently in Saudi Arabia, where he is engaged in prayers and seeking divine guidance on his future political direction. He expressed gratitude to his supporters, friends, and well-wishers for their continued concern and prayers. Mustapha reiterated his commitment to transparency and urged his followers to remain patient and focused on his spiritual journey. As the 2027 general elections draw closer, political developments in Nigeria remain closely watched, and Mustapha’s clarification adds to the ongoing discourse on party dynamics and leadership choices. His current absence from active politics may signal a strategic pause, but his influence in Bauchi State and beyond continues to be felt.
