Troops of Operation SAVANNAH SHIELD have successfully rescued a woman and four children during a targeted ambush against suspected terrorists in Borgu Local Government Area of Niger State, marking a significant security development in the region. The operation, carried out on May 10 at approximately 6:45 a.m., was executed by soldiers from the Combat Service and Infantry Brigade (CSIB), XVI, stationed at Forward Operating Base (FOB) Audu Fari. The mission was part of ongoing efforts to disrupt terrorist activities and prevent infiltration into sensitive zones, particularly around the Kainji Lake National Park (KLNP) axis.
The ambush was strategically set in Bakpa Village based on credible intelligence indicating that a group of terrorists was attempting to cross from the Jadua area into the KLNP region. As the insurgents moved through the area, they came into direct contact with the Nigerian military forces. Upon sighting the troops, the terrorists panicked and abandoned their families, fleeing into the dense forest to evade capture. This left behind one adult female and four children, who were immediately rescued by the military personnel.
According to Zagazola Makama, a counter-insurgency and security expert in the Lake Chad region, the rescued victims are now receiving medical and psychological care. He confirmed that the operation also yielded three motorcycles and one mobile phone, which are believed to have belonged to the fleeing terrorists. These recovered items are being examined as part of broader forensic and intelligence efforts to trace the suspects and dismantle their network.
The military’s proactive approach underscores its commitment to protecting civilians and maintaining security in high-risk areas. Operation SAVANNAH SHIELD continues to conduct sustained clearance and ambush missions across Niger State and surrounding regions to prevent terrorist infiltration and neutralize threats. The rescue of the woman and children highlights the human cost of insecurity and the critical role of military operations in safeguarding vulnerable populations.
Efforts are currently underway to track down the fleeing terrorists and restrict their movement within the area. The Nigerian Armed Forces remain vigilant, ensuring that terrorist networks cannot exploit porous borders or remote communities. This operation reinforces the government’s resolve to restore peace and stability in the region, while also demonstrating the effectiveness of intelligence-led military responses. As security operations continue, communities in Borgu and nearby areas are being urged to remain alert and cooperate with security agencies to support lasting peace.
