The African Democratic Congress (ADC) support group in Enugu State, known as ADC Likeminds, has praised former Vice President Atiku Abubakar for appointing Nollywood actor and politician Kenneth Okonkwo as his spokesperson for the 2027 presidential campaign. The group commended Atiku for his continued track record of identifying and promoting exceptional talent across Nigeria. In a statement signed by Comrade Adolphus Ude, the group highlighted that the appointment underscores Atiku’s reputation as a visionary leader who values inclusivity and merit over tribal or regional affiliations.
ADC Likeminds expressed deep gratitude to Atiku for selecting one of their own for such a pivotal role in his campaign. They noted that the decision reflects confidence in Okonkwo’s contributions to Nigerian society through his work in the film and media industry, as well as his political engagements. The group emphasized that Okonkwo’s appointment is not just a personal milestone but also a significant step toward greater representation for the South East in national politics.
The statement recalled Atiku’s history of discovering and nurturing talent during his tenure as Vice President under President Olusegun Obasanjo from May 1999 to May 2007. At that time, he assembled a globally respected economic team that played a key role in Nigeria’s economic turnaround. Among those he mentored were Malam Nasiru El Rufai, Nuhu Ribadu, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Professor Chukwuma Charles Soludo, Professor Osita Ogbu, and Dr. Akinwumi Adesina. The economic reforms led to the cancellation of Nigeria’s $30 billion debt by the Paris Club creditors, a landmark achievement in the country’s financial history.
Beyond economics, the group pointed out that Atiku has consistently supported talents in education, agriculture, and media. For example, Malam Garba Shehu, a journalist, was discovered by Atiku and later became a key media aide. He was later loaned to President Muhammadu Buhari during the 2015 campaign and eventually became the most prominent spokesperson of that administration. This pattern, according to the group, demonstrates Atiku’s ability to look beyond ethnicity and creed in selecting capable individuals.
The appointment of Kenneth Okonkwo, an Igboman, as spokesperson is seen as a strong statement of inclusion. ADC Likeminds believes this gesture strengthens the sense of belonging for the South East in Atiku’s campaign. They expressed confidence that if Atiku can deliver on this promise during the campaign, the region can expect even greater representation and development when he assumes office in May 2027.
The group urged Okonkwo to leverage his extensive experience in media and politics to effectively communicate the ADC’s vision and manifesto to Nigerians. They called on him to be bold, fearless, and strategic in his role, ensuring that Atiku’s message reaches every corner of the country. As the 2027 election approaches, this appointment is being viewed as a strategic move that reinforces Atiku’s image as a leader who builds bridges and empowers diverse voices in Nigerian politics.
