The Sokoto State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has raised concerns over the sudden withdrawal of its Sokoto North senatorial candidate, Ahmed Maccido, from the 2027 general elections. Maccido, a former senator for the same constituency, officially announced his exit in a letter dated September 30, addressed to the PDP state chairman, Hayattu Tafida. In the letter, he described the decision as voluntary and emphasized that it was made without any external pressure. However, he did not provide a specific reason for stepping down nor revealed his future political plans.
Tafida, speaking on behalf of the state party leadership, expressed skepticism about the timing and circumstances surrounding Maccido’s withdrawal. He suggested that there may be external influence from other political parties, though he offered no concrete evidence to back this claim. “Obviously, there is,” Tafida stated when asked if he suspected outside interference. He noted that Maccido remains a prominent political figure with strong support bases in both Sokoto North and Sokoto South, making his departure unexpected and potentially disruptive to the party’s strategy.
The PDP chairman criticized the timing of the resignation, arguing that it comes too late in the electoral cycle. “My only grouse with him is, why didn’t he resign before this time, before the primaries?” Tafida questioned. He explained that replacing a candidate at this stage is a complicated process that requires significant coordination and approval from the national headquarters. “The process of changing a candidate is cumbersome, so you should have done that earlier than now to give the people room to put another candidate in,” he added.
Despite the controversy, Tafida insisted that the state party would handle the matter internally before forwarding it to the PDP national leadership for further review. He also dismissed fears that Maccido’s withdrawal could trigger a wave of defections within the party. “I don’t expect other PDP candidates to follow him,” he said confidently. The state leadership will deliberate on the next steps, including potential replacements and internal disciplinary actions if warranted.
As the 2027 elections draw closer, the PDP in Sokoto faces mounting challenges in maintaining unity and preparing credible candidates. Maccido’s withdrawal adds uncertainty to the party’s campaign strategy in a key senatorial zone. His absence may open space for new contenders, but the delayed timing complicates the selection process. The situation underscores the fragile nature of political alliances and the pressures faced by aspirants in Nigeria’s competitive electoral landscape. The coming weeks will reveal how the PDP navigates this development and whether it can maintain momentum ahead of the next election cycle.
