The National Peace Committee (NPC), led by former Head of State General Abdulsalami Abubakar (rtd.) and Bishop Matthew Hassan Kukah, has issued a strong warning to President Bola Tinubu, former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, and other political actors against inflammatory and inciting campaigns ahead of the 2027 general elections. The committee’s statement, released on Monday, urges all political stakeholders to uphold peace and prevent violence during the upcoming electoral cycle. It highlights growing concerns over rising tensions, citing 60 election-related incidents recorded across Nigeria within just one month. These incidents include political violence, intimidation, threats, attacks on political activities, and widespread misinformation.
The NPC emphasized that false or provocative statements must be immediately discontinued by political parties, candidates, and their supporters. The committee called on all actors to honor the commitments made under the National Peace Accord, verify information before sharing it, and actively discourage unlawful behavior among their followers. The statement stressed that every candidate must campaign peacefully, every party must operate within legal boundaries, and every citizen must exercise their right to choose without fear or coercion.
The committee also directed a message to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), urging it to strengthen its monitoring of political campaigns. INEC is expected to ensure strict compliance with the Electoral Act 2026 and other relevant regulations governing political conduct. Where violations are detected, the commission should take swift regulatory action and promptly refer suspected criminal offenses to law enforcement agencies for appropriate prosecution.
The warning comes amid increasing reports of political unrest in various parts of the country. The NPC expressed deep concern over the potential for these incidents to escalate into broader conflict if left unchecked. By calling for accountability and responsible campaigning, the committee aims to safeguard Nigeria’s democratic process and protect citizens from harm. The group believes that peaceful elections are not only possible but essential for national stability and development.
As Nigeria prepares for the 2027 elections, the NPC’s intervention underscores the urgency of maintaining calm and order in the political space. The committee’s leadership, drawing from both military and religious experience, brings credibility to its appeal for unity and restraint. Their message serves as a critical reminder that democracy thrives not just through votes, but through peace, respect, and adherence to the rule of law. The coming years will test Nigeria’s commitment to democratic values, and the NPC’s call may prove pivotal in shaping a more peaceful electoral environment.
