Exercise Patience, Vote for Liberation

A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ogun State, Segun Showunmi, has called on non-indigenes and hunters in the state to exercise patience and support President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 presidential election, describing it as a crucial moment for national unity and future Igbo leadership. Speaking during a meeting in Abeokuta on Saturday, Showunmi, who is also the Convener of The Alternative Movement, emphasized that voting for Tinubu in 2027 is not just about supporting a candidate but about sending a powerful message of inclusivity and regional balance.

Showunmi addressed members of various non-indigene associations and hunters’ groups from communities including Igbo, Igede, Tiv, Calabar, and Edo, urging them to remain politically mature and avoid confrontation. He stressed that while the Igbo community has long awaited a presidency, achieving it through peaceful means and strategic voting is more effective than conflict. “Our people have been very fair to the Igbos. The only thing remaining is that Presidency, but nobody can get Presidency by fighting every time. Just calm down. Very, very soon, we will carry an Igbo man and put him in that Villa,” he said.

He argued that if the South-West, South-South, South-East, and North-Central regions collectively deliver overwhelming votes for Tinubu, it would demonstrate that no region is superior to another in Nigeria’s political landscape. “The only way to do that is to use the 2027 election to make a strong statement that nobody is more important than another person in this country,” Showunmi added. This approach, he believes, will lay the foundation for equitable power rotation and reduce regional tensions.

Showunmi referred to non-indigenes in Ogun State as the “Ogun Tribe,” highlighting their vital role in the state’s economy and development. He promised continued advocacy for their rights and pledged to stand by them whenever they face maltreatment or injustice. His appeal was aimed at mobilizing massive voter turnout across Ogun Central, Ogun East, and Ogun West, with a target of delivering close to 2.5 million votes for Tinubu.

According to him, winning the election alone is insufficient; the margin of victory must be decisive enough to prove that zoning principles are respected nationwide. By consolidating support for Tinubu, he believes the South-West can strengthen its political influence and set the stage for future equitable leadership transitions. The message from Showunmi underscores a broader call for national cohesion and strategic political action ahead of the next general elections.
