The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Osun State has raised serious alarm over a surge in extra-judicial killings across the state, particularly in Osogbo, the capital, and other communities. In a statement released on Saturday by its Director of Media and Information, Kola Olabisi, the party expressed deep concern over the growing insecurity, which it says has failed to abate even after the conclusion of the August 15, 2023 governorship election. The APC had anticipated that the peaceful end of the electoral process, which saw Governor Ademola Adeleke declared winner by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), would bring an end to violence. Instead, the party now describes this hope as “a mirage.”
The opposition party highlighted that violent incidents have become increasingly frequent, raising fears among residents and deterring visitors and investors from engaging with the state. It warned that the persistent reports of killings could damage Osun’s reputation and negatively impact economic activities. The APC stressed that the safety of people, both locals and outsiders, must be prioritized by the state government and security agencies.
A recent incident cited in the statement occurred on Friday at Owo-Eba, near Ilesa Garage in Osogbo, where two individuals were reportedly killed by unidentified attackers armed with guns, machetes, knives, and cudgels. The attack took place in front of Peka’s Bar, a public location, underscoring the brazen nature of the violence. One victim was identified as Small Rugged, known within certain circles for alleged involvement in thuggery, while the second was Seyi Osha. Others injured included Mascot, described as a personal assistant to Small Rugged, Spirit, and Agba Kali, who was merely a passer-by.
The APC expressed sympathy for the victims and their families, condemning the normalization of violence as a means of settling disputes. It called on Governor Adeleke’s administration to take decisive action to restore peace and protect citizens. The party also urged the police and other security forces to intensify operations and ensure that perpetrators are brought to justice through due legal process. The APC emphasized that no excuse justifies extra-judicial killings, insisting that all accused persons must face fair trials.
As Osun State grapples with rising insecurity, the APC’s call for urgent intervention underscores the need for coordinated efforts to restore public confidence and ensure lasting peace. The situation remains a critical challenge that demands immediate attention from all stakeholders.
