The Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) National Chairman, Dr. Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, has warned that opposition political parties must remain vigilant as Nigeria approaches the 2027 general elections, emphasizing that the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) is not above engaging in dirty politics. Speaking during an interview on Arise Television’s Prime Time on Wednesday, Baba-Ahmed stressed that the opposition cannot afford to be complacent or naive about the tactics being employed by the ruling party.
Dr. Baba-Ahmed, who previously served as Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Political Matters, highlighted a growing concern within the opposition: legal challenges and internal factionalism threatening the stability of several political parties. He revealed that out of the eight main opposition parties, approximately five or six are currently entangled in court cases. These legal battles, he noted, could jeopardize their ability to field candidates or even participate fully in the upcoming elections.
He pointed out that some parties have already fractured into competing factions, raising doubts about which group will ultimately represent the party on election day. “Too many political parties in the opposition are limping from legal issues and factionalisation,” Baba-Ahmed said. “Which faction is going to be there? And so, we learnt our lesson very quickly.”
To avoid similar pitfalls, the PRP leader explained that his party has taken a strategic approach by ensuring only one candidate is put forward — someone they are confident can withstand any legal scrutiny. “It was better to put forward only a candidate we are sure can survive all the legal hurdles,” he stated. “So, we think these issues are behind us now.”
Baba-Ahmed’s remarks come at a time when political tensions across Nigeria are rising, with increasing reports of electoral manipulation, sabotage, and legal maneuvers aimed at weakening opposition forces. His warning underscores the need for unity, preparedness, and resilience among opposition parties as they prepare to challenge the APC’s dominance.
As the 2027 elections loom, the PRP’s cautious strategy may serve as a model for other opposition groups seeking to navigate the complex and often hostile political landscape. The coming years will test not only the strength of individual candidates but also the integrity and cohesion of the parties backing them.
