Champion Breweries and VFD Group Defy Market Selloff, Outperforming Broader Indices

Champion Breweries Plc and VFD Group Plc emerged as the top performers on the Nigerian Exchange (NGX) on Wednesday, recording strong gains despite a broader market decline that marked the second consecutive session of selling pressure. Champion Breweries saw its share price surge 9.90 percent, rising from N10.10 to N11.10, while VFD Group followed closely with a 9.52 percent increase, climbing from N10.50 to N11.50. These gains stood out sharply against a market dominated by profit-taking and investor caution.

The NGX All-Share Index (ASI) dipped 1.05 percent, falling from 244,802.11 to 242,223.10 points, reflecting sustained weakness across most sectors. Equity market capitalisation also declined by approximately N1.67 trillion, dropping from N158.722 trillion to N157.050 trillion. This downturn was driven by widespread selling, with five stocks—Omatek Ventures Plc, Zichis Plc, Japaul Gold & Ventures Plc, FTN Cocoa Processors Plc, and McNichols Plc—each falling by the maximum daily limit of 10.00 percent.

Despite the overall negative sentiment, trading activity remained active, though slightly moderated compared to the previous day. Investors traded 534.45 million shares worth N22.28 billion across 46,943 deals, down from 753.17 million shares, N27.82 billion, and 54,051 deals recorded on Tuesday. The reduced volume suggests cautious participation amid uncertainty in the market.

Other notable gainers included UPDC Plc, which rose 5.88 percent from N3.40 to N3.60; Ikeja Hotel Plc, up 4.58 percent from N42.55 to N44.50; and Cutix Plc, which gained 3.06 percent from N2.29 to N2.36. These modest increases were not enough to counterbalance the losses in other segments, highlighting the selective nature of investor interest.

The performance of Champion Breweries and VFD Group underscores investor confidence in specific blue-chip stocks even during volatile market conditions. Their strong gains may reflect underlying fundamentals, sector-specific optimism, or strategic buying by institutional investors. As the NGX continues to navigate macroeconomic headwinds, these standout performances could signal emerging opportunities for investors seeking resilient equities.
