Anambra State Police Command has confirmed that two people were killed in a shooting incident that occurred in Awka, the state capital, on Sunday evening, attributing the attack to suspected cultists. The police have launched a full-scale manhunt for the perpetrators and are appealing to the public for assistance in identifying them. According to the command’s spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the attackers were three unidentified individuals traveling in a silver-coloured Toyota Corolla, whose registration number remains unknown. They carried out the shootings at separate locations within Awka, leaving two victims dead.
The police responded swiftly upon receiving distress calls, mobilizing patrol teams to the affected areas to track down the suspects. Both victims were taken to a hospital where medical personnel confirmed their deaths. One of the victims has been identified as Aiza Nwosu, a well-known personality in Awka, while the other remains unidentified. Authorities recovered evidence from the crime scenes, including N7,550 in cash, one Moniepoint ATM card, and a pair of slippers, which may aid in the investigation.
The Commissioner of Police for Anambra State, CP Nnanna Oji Ama, strongly condemned the killings, calling them an unacceptable violation of peace and security in the state. He described the act as dastardly and emphasized the need for immediate justice. In response, he directed that the case be handed over to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Awka for thorough and discreet investigation. Security operatives have since intensified patrols, surveillance, and intelligence gathering across Awka and surrounding areas to prevent further violence.
The police continue to urge residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to the nearest police station or through emergency hotlines. The command stressed that collaboration between law enforcement and the public is crucial in bringing the culprits to justice. With rising concerns over insecurity in urban centers, this incident highlights the ongoing challenges faced by security agencies in maintaining peace. As investigations proceed, authorities are working to restore confidence among citizens and ensure swift action against those responsible. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the need for sustained efforts to combat cultism and violent crime in Nigeria’s communities.
