Four traders injured during a violent shooting incident at the Bridge Head drug market in Onitsha have been discharged from hospital, following a chaotic confrontation that erupted last week when police attempted to arrest a suspect allegedly transporting drugs to the motor park for waybills. The incident, which left six people injured, began when the suspect tried to evade arrest, prompting local thugs to attack a security operative in an effort to shield him. The Anambra State Commissioner of Police, CP Nnanna Oji Ama, visited the scene promptly to de-escalate tensions and reassured the public that all injured victims would receive proper medical care. Under his directive, the Police Area Command in Onitsha, led by ACP Tope Fasugba, has taken full responsibility for the treatment and welfare of those affected. According to DAILY POST, four of the six injured individuals have since been discharged, while two remain hospitalized under close supervision.
A police source familiar with the situation revealed that the incident has placed a significant financial burden on the area command, but praised CP Oji Ama and ACP Fasugba for their compassionate leadership. “Thank God for the new CP and the Area Commander, who have large hearts and have been ensuring the welfare of the victims,” the source said. Despite initial perceptions that the conflict was between police and traders, the source clarified that the real culprits were touts attempting to protect the drug runner.
