The Ogun State Government has called on youths to take active responsibility for peace and order as Nigeria approaches the 2027 general elections, emphasizing that dialogue is more effective than disruption in building a stable society. This message was delivered by the Secretary to the State Government, Tokunbo Talabi, during the 2026 International Youth Day celebration themed “Different Contexts, Common Aspirations,” held in Abeokuta and organized by the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN), Ogun State chapter.
Talabi commended the current leadership of NYCN in Ogun State for demonstrating maturity and strong leadership qualities, expressing confidence that young people would remain neutral and avoid political bigotry during the upcoming electoral cycle. He stressed that youths are often vulnerable to manipulation during election periods, which is why the government is actively involving them in efforts to maintain law and order and prevent violence. “As they say, build the youth, build the nation,” Talabi said, highlighting the administration’s commitment to providing positive role models and opportunities for youth development.
He underscored that the state government has achieved greater success through peaceful dialogue rather than confrontation, urging all stakeholders to prioritize negotiation over disruption. “Even when you disrupt, you still have to come to the table to negotiate for peace to come. So why don’t you start with the negotiation and the discussion?” he asked, reinforcing the value of calm, constructive engagement. The government, he added, remains open to youth ideas and initiatives, pledging support for programs that enhance their capacity and contribute to sustainable development.
Also speaking at the event, the State Head of Service, Olanrewaju Saka, emphasized that despite diverse backgrounds, young Nigerians share common aspirations for a better future. He urged the newly inaugurated ward executives of NYCN to serve with integrity, inclusiveness, and dedication to public service. In his address, the NYCN state chairman, Akolawole Shoremi, praised the Abiodun-led administration for approving Ogun State’s first-ever Youth Policy Document and for supporting the inauguration of 2,360 ward executives — a milestone described as unprecedented in Nigeria.
Shoremi charged Ogun youths not to be exploited as political thugs, urging them to obtain their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs), participate in voter education, and engage fully in the electoral process. “We should not become tools in the hands of politicians. It is the right orientation, it is the right education that we should give to our young people,” he stated. Meanwhile, Pa Simeon Ogundipe, pioneer state chairman of NYCN, called on the government to emulate Western nations by creating more jobs and empowering youth economically.
With these collective appeals, Ogun State’s leaders are positioning youth as key agents of peace and progress ahead of the 2027 elections, laying the foundation for a more inclusive and participatory democratic culture.
