One person has been killed and three others injured in a tragic shooting incident that occurred during a traditional marriage ceremony, commonly referred to as a “DJ,” in Tudun Yola, Kano State, on August 16. The Kano State Police Command confirmed the event, stating that a 34-year-old man, Rabiu Mukhtar, was arrested for allegedly opening fire at the gathering. The suspect is accused of using a pump-action gun to shoot four attendees, leaving one dead and three wounded. Authorities recovered the firearm from his possession following the arrest.
The victims identified are Sadiq Abubakar, Umar Rabiu, Muhammad Sadisu, and Aliyu Mustapha. They were rushed to the Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital in Kano for medical attention. According to CSP Abdullahi Haruna-Kiyawa, the Public Relations Officer of the police command, Aliyu Mustapha succumbed to his injuries while receiving treatment. The other three victims remain hospitalized and are responding positively to medical care.
Haruna-Kiyawa revealed that both the suspect and another individual were taken into custody and are being detained at the police headquarters in Bompai for further investigation. Preliminary findings suggest the shooting may have been sparked by a dispute over music being played at the event, which some attendees reportedly objected to. The suspect told investigators he fired shots after learning that suspected thugs, known locally as “Yan Daba,” were en route to the venue.
Police officials emphasized that they are conducting a thorough probe to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident. The spokesperson assured the public that all suspects involved will face prosecution once the investigation is complete. This incident has raised concerns about security during public gatherings in the state, particularly cultural events where tensions can escalate quickly.
The community has expressed shock and grief over the loss of life, calling for increased vigilance and stronger law enforcement presence at such events. As investigations continue, authorities are urging anyone with additional information to come forward. The tragedy underscores the need for heightened awareness and preventive measures to avoid similar incidents in the future.
