Adeleke Receives Certificate of Return in Osun Election from Wike

Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke has officially presented his Certificate of Return to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, in Abuja, marking a key step in the formal recognition of his victory in the 2023 gubernatorial election. The presentation took place on Thursday, following his earlier meeting with President Bola Tinubu at the Presidential Villa. This move underscores the completion of official procedures after the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, formally issued the certificate to Adeleke on Wednesday.

Governor Adeleke’s win was confirmed after he secured 511,067 votes in the August 15, 2023, election, defeating his closest rival, Bola Oyebamiji of the All Progressives Congress (APC), who garnered 444,815 votes. Najeem Salaam of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) came in third with 17,180 votes. The results were declared by INEC after a thorough collation process across all local government areas in Osun State.

The presentation of the Certificate of Return to Minister Wike is seen as part of the customary protocol for newly elected governors, especially when engaging with federal officials. It also reflects the broader political dynamics in Nigeria, where interactions between state leaders and federal ministers often carry symbolic weight. Governor Adeleke’s visit to both the President and the FCT Minister highlights his efforts to build strong intergovernmental relations from the outset of his tenure.

Earlier, Minister Wike had made public remarks suggesting he would have been present in Osun during the election if President Tinubu had insisted on an APC victory. His comments sparked discussions about political influence in electoral outcomes and the role of federal actors in state elections. Despite such statements, the election concluded peacefully, with INEC declaring Adeleke the winner without major disputes.

As Governor Adeleke begins his term, his administration will focus on delivering on campaign promises, including infrastructure development, job creation, and improved security in Osun State. The successful transition of power, backed by official documentation like the Certificate of Return, sets the stage for a stable governance period. His engagement with federal leaders signals a commitment to cooperation and national unity as he prepares to lead Osun into a new chapter.
