Ghana police have successfully foiled a planned bank robbery in Labone, Accra, killing two suspected armed robbers and arresting a Nigerian national, Augustine Okechukwu Maazi, who was identified as a key member of the criminal gang. The operation took place on Thursday after intelligence reports indicated that a group of robbers intended to attack GCB Bank, Ecobank, and Zenith Bank in the area. Police swiftly deployed a response team to intercept the suspects, leading to a dramatic confrontation.
The Ghana Police Service confirmed that the gang was spotted near the targeted banks with their vehicles parked close by. When officers arrived, one vehicle attempted to flee, triggering a chase. During the pursuit, police apprehended Mr Maazi alive while he tried to escape. Two other suspects were shot dead during a shootout as they attempted to flee in a second vehicle. Two additional members of the gang managed to get away despite the intense police engagement.
According to the police statement, the operation was carried out based on timely intelligence that allowed law enforcement to anticipate and neutralize the threat before any bank could be robbed. Officers engaged the suspects in a firefight, resulting in the deaths of two armed men. The bodies of the deceased have been taken to the morgue for preservation, identification, and autopsy procedures, as required under standard investigative protocols.
Among the recovered items from the scene were two vehicles—a Toyota Highlander with registration number GS-1434-18 and a Hyundai Tucson with registration number GS 7915-17—as well as a blow pistol used by the suspects. These items are now in police custody and will be examined as part of the ongoing investigation. Mr Maazi is currently being questioned and is assisting authorities with further details about the gang’s operations and potential accomplices.
