Osun Guber: Kwara CP Urges Deployed Personnel to Uphold Discipline and Neutrality

As the Osun State gubernatorial election draws near, the Kwara State Commissioner of Police, Ojo Adekimi, has issued a stern directive to all officers and men deployed for election security duties, emphasizing strict discipline, neutrality, and professional conduct. The deployment comes ahead of the critical electoral exercise, with police personnel expected to uphold law and order while remaining apolitical and impartial. Commissioner Adekimi conveyed the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu’s instructions that every officer must discharge their duties strictly in line with the law and established rules of engagement.

In a briefing held in Ilorin, Adekimi reminded officers that election security is not just a routine task but a vital national responsibility. He warned against any behaviour that could tarnish the image of the Nigeria Police Force or erode public trust in the electoral process. Specific misconducts highlighted include extortion, fraternization with political actors, and the unnecessary use of force. These actions, he stressed, are unacceptable and will be dealt with severely.

The commissioner also emphasized the importance of vigilance, effective communication between units, and coordination with commanding officers. Personnel were charged to protect lives and property, preserve public order, and ensure a secure environment where citizens can freely and safely exercise their voting rights without fear of intimidation or interference. Adekimi expressed confidence in the readiness and capability of the deployed officers, urging them to act as exemplary ambassadors of the Kwara State Police Command.

A statement released by the command’s spokesperson, SP Adetoun Ejire Adeyemi, confirmed the directives given during the briefing. It reiterated the need for officers to remain alert and responsive throughout the election period. The message was clear: professionalism and integrity must be maintained at all times, regardless of political pressures or challenges on the ground.

This proactive stance by the Kwara State Police Command reflects broader efforts across Nigeria to ensure credible and peaceful elections. With voter turnout and electoral credibility under close scrutiny, the role of law enforcement in maintaining order and fairness becomes even more crucial. As the nation watches closely, the performance of these officers may set a precedent for future electoral operations in other states.
