The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ebonyi State has strongly condemned a violent attack on former All Progressives Congress (APC) chieftain, Barrister Ifeanyi Nworie, and his supporters, which occurred on Saturday in Idembia, Ezza South Local Government Area. The incident, allegedly carried out by agents and appointees of the APC-led Ebonyi State Government, also targeted journalists covering the event. According to the PDP, the attack is part of a broader pattern of intimidation aimed at undermining political activities ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The opposition party revealed that in recent weeks, its members and supporters have faced increasing threats from individuals linked to the state government. These include a former member of the House of Representatives, senior government officials, and ex-PDP leaders such as the former Ezza South LG chairman. The PDP leadership claims these actors are orchestrating acts of violence to suppress dissent and maintain political dominance.
At a press briefing held in Abakaliki on Saturday night, PDP State Chairman Chukwuma Igwe disclosed that vehicles were damaged and several people assaulted with dangerous weapons during the attack. He confirmed that eight individuals are currently receiving medical treatment in hospitals. Igwe emphasized that the press conference was convened to alert Nigerians about the undemocratic actions being taken to disrupt the electoral process in Ebonyi State.
He called on all security agencies to uphold their constitutional duty to protect every citizen’s right to freedom of association and political participation. “We state unequivocally that the PDP in Ebonyi State will not be intimidated by undemocratic forces, irrespective of who may be behind them,” Igwe declared. He urged party members to remain peaceful and law-abiding as political campaigns intensify.
The PDP further appealed to the Nigeria Police Force, DSS, NSCDC, Nigerian Armed Forces, and other security bodies to ensure impartiality and maintain a level playing field for all political parties. They stressed that no one should have a monopoly on violence or misconduct in the democratic process. Igwe reiterated that Ebonyi State belongs to all its citizens, and every eligible person has the right to express their political preference without fear.
The party affirmed its readiness to pursue all constitutional and lawful means to safeguard the rights and safety of its members. As Nigeria prepares for the 2027 elections, the PDP’s stance highlights growing concerns over political violence and the need for inclusive, fair electoral processes across the country.
