A tragic rescue operation in Kano State ended with the recovery of a father and his teenage daughter, both found dead after falling into an abandoned dry well in Yancibi Village, Tsanyawa Local Government Area. The victims, identified as Abubakar Abdullahi, 45, and his 15-year-old daughter Fiddausi Abubakar, fell into the disused well on Tuesday evening, July 21, 2024. The Kano State Fire Service responded to the emergency call and deployed firefighters to the scene, but challenging conditions including darkness and the well’s depth hindered rescue efforts that night.
The Fire Service’s Public Relations Officer, Saminu Yusif Abdullahi, confirmed in a statement released on Wednesday that a reinforced emergency team was dispatched from the agency’s headquarters to continue the operation. Upon arrival, the team successfully retrieved both bodies from the well. They were found unconscious and later pronounced dead at the scene. The bodies were handed over to the Village Head of Yancibi, Shamsu Sani, for burial arrangements in accordance with local customs.
Preliminary findings suggest that Fiddausi accidentally fell into the old well, prompting her father to enter in an attempt to rescue her. Unfortunately, Abubakar Abdullahi was unable to escape, leading to the tragic loss of both lives. The Kano State Fire Service extended its condolences to the grieving family and urged the public to exercise extreme caution around such hazards.
