President Bola Tinubu has approved 26 new appointments across 10 federal agencies and commissions, marking a significant reshuffle in Nigeria’s public sector leadership. The appointments, announced by presidential adviser Bayo Onanuga on July 20, take immediate effect and include key roles in energy, fiscal management, population, and education sectors. Among the most notable appointments is the selection of former Ekiti State Governor Ayo Fayose as chairman of the Rural Electrification Agency (REA). Fayose will lead the REA board alongside Ahmadu Abubakar and Ilyasu Ibrahim Makinta, who were appointed as members and non-executive directors. The agency’s managing director, Abba Abubakar Aliyu, and three existing executive directors will also serve on the board.
The Rural Electrification Agency plays a crucial role in expanding electricity access to underserved communities across Nigeria. It also supports off-grid and renewable energy projects aimed at improving power supply in rural areas. With Fayose’s appointment, the government aims to strengthen the agency’s efforts in addressing the country’s persistent energy challenges.
In another major development, Major General Junaid Bindawa was appointed chairman of the National Salary and Wages Commission. Former Lagos federal lawmaker Olajumoke Okoya-Thomas will serve as the commission’s secretary. The commission now includes commissioners representing Benue, Oyo, Kaduna, Borno, Enugu, Edo, and Kogi states. These appointments are expected to enhance the commission’s ability to advise the government on fair compensation structures for public sector workers.
Akinola Odeyemi has been named managing director of the Nigerian Bulk Electricity Trading Plc (NBET), a key player in Nigeria’s electricity market. NBET purchases power from generation companies and sells it to distribution companies and other eligible participants. Abuh Mohammed will lead the National Population Commission as director-general, while Anthony Inalegwu Godwin takes over as chairman and CEO of the Nigeria Atomic Energy Commission.
Julius Oloro will become chief executive officer of the National Centre for Agricultural Mechanisation in Kwara State, replacing A.R. Kamal, who passed away in January. Tosin Johnson Adeyanju, formerly executive secretary of the National Lottery Trust Fund, has been reassigned as secretary of the Revenue Mobilisation and Fiscal Commission.
Abdullahi Maikano Saidu was appointed chairman of the Fiscal Responsibility Commission, which monitors fiscal management by public institutions and ensures compliance with the Fiscal Responsibility Act. The commission’s new board includes Mohammed Asmau, Mohammed Aliyu Makama, Suleiman Gidado, Louis O. Ndukwe, Amaechi Ugwele, and Olaniyi Idowu Onikola.
Shuni Muhammad Dahiru was appointed executive secretary of the National Commission for Mass Literacy, Adult and Non-Formal Education, replacing Shu’aibu Shehu Aliyu, who was transferred to the Petroleum Technology Development Fund in April. Gisaor Vincent Iorja has been named executive director of finance at the Federal Housing Authority, replacing Mathias Byuan, who resigned to contest the Benue State governorship election. Iorja previously served as secretary of the Benue State Independent Electoral Commission.
These appointments reflect President Tinubu’s ongoing efforts to restructure key institutions and enhance governance across Nigeria’s federal agencies. The new leadership is expected to bring fresh perspectives and renewed focus to critical national development priorities.
