Foreign Nationals and Nigerians Arrested Over Alleged Illegal Mining in Nasarawa Community

Several foreign nationals and Nigerian citizens have been arrested in Amba, Kokona Local Government Area of Nasarawa State, over their alleged involvement in illegal mining activities. The arrests took place on Friday, 17th July, during a security operation led by the Deputy Governor of Nasarawa State, Dr. Emmanuel Agbadu Akabe. The operation underscores the state government’s commitment to curbing illicit mining and ensuring compliance with regulations in the solid minerals sector. Authorities have not yet released the exact number of suspects or their identities, but the action reflects a broader crackdown on unauthorised mining operations.

The news was shared by Ebenezer Daniel, Personal Assistant to the Governor on Chieftaincy Affairs, through a post on his official Facebook page. Daniel confirmed the arrests and highlighted the government’s resolve to protect the state’s natural resources from exploitation. The operation in Amba, a known mining hotspot, was conducted in coordination with security agencies and local authorities. It comes amid increasing concerns over environmental degradation and safety risks posed by illegal mining activities in the region.

Nasarawa State has long been a key player in Nigeria’s solid minerals industry, with deposits of tin, columbite, and other valuable minerals. However, unregulated mining has led to environmental damage, land disputes, and threats to community safety. The state government has repeatedly called for stricter enforcement of mining laws to ensure sustainable development and fair revenue distribution. This recent operation is seen as part of a larger strategy to bring the mining sector under formal regulation.

The arrests follow previous crackdowns in other parts of the state, including areas in Lafia and Keana, where similar operations were carried out. Security operatives have been tasked with monitoring mining sites and identifying individuals operating without proper permits. The government has also urged local communities to report suspicious activities and cooperate with authorities to combat illegal mining.

While details about the suspects remain limited, the operation has drawn attention to the challenges of enforcing mining laws in remote areas. Authorities are expected to conduct further investigations and possibly charge the arrested individuals with offences under the Nigerian Minerals and Mining Act. The government has also reiterated its plans to strengthen partnerships with federal agencies and improve oversight in the sector.

This crackdown sends a clear message that illegal mining will not be tolerated in Nasarawa State. As the government continues to enforce regulations, stakeholders in the mining industry are being encouraged to operate within the legal framework. The move is expected to promote transparency, environmental protection, and economic growth in the state’s mineral-rich regions.
